2315 — “Whoever is entrusted with a deposit bears no liability.”
It is narrated in a report attributed to the Prophet through ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. It is reported from him through several routes:
The first: through al-Muthannā ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, from him. Ibn Mājah transmitted it (2/73). Al-Muthannā is weak and became confused in his later years.
The second: through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥajabī, from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī transmitted it (p. 306), and al-Bayhaqī transmitted it from him (6/289). Ibn Abī Ḥātim listed this al-Ḥajabī (3/2/323), based on the narrations of Ibn al-Mubārak and Wakīʿ from him, but mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation concerning him. It was apparently for this reason that al-Bayhaqī said after the hadith: “Its chain of transmission is weak.” I say: Yet its weakness is not severe, so al-Ḥajabī may be cited as corroboration, since he is unknown in status. Perhaps he is included in Ibn Ḥibbān’s al-Thiqāt. I then found that he had indeed listed him among the Followers of the Followers (7/422), through the narration of Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl. Thus, three trustworthy narrators reported from him.
The third: through ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥassān, from him, with similar wording. Al-Dāraquṭnī transmitted it through ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār, from him, and said: “ʿAmr and ʿUbaydah are both weak.”
The fourth: through ʿAmr ibn Khālid, who said: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from him. Al-Khulʿī transmitted it in al-Fawāʾid, and al-Bayhaqī cited it in suspended form.
