Al-Ḍiyāʾ also narrated it through Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ: Ibn Abī Khālid informed us, from the same chain, with the report attributed to the Companion. He then cited from al-Dāraquṭnī what had previously been quoted from al-Manāwī. There can be no doubt that the agreement of these trustworthy narrators in relating the hadith from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid as attributed to the Companion gives assurance that attributing it to the Prophet was an error on the part of Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl or his teacher, Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl.
However, I found a supporting report for the hadith attributed to the Prophet. Al-Quḍāʿī transmitted it in Musnad al-Shihāb (folio 37/1) through Salm ibn Junādah al-Suwāʾī, who said: “My father informed us”; and through ʿAlī ibn Mushir. Both narrated from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributing it to the Prophet. I say: This is an authentic chain through the second route, that of Ibn Mushir, while the first route corroborates it. Thus, the hadith is established as attributed to the Prophet. Praise be to Allah, first and last.
2314 — “Whoever refrains from asking, Allah will enable him to do so; whoever seeks independence, Allah will enrich him; and whoever asks people while possessing the equivalent of five awāq has begged importunately.”
Aḥmad transmitted it (4/138): Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us from his father, from a man of Muzaynah, whose mother said to him: “Why do you not go and ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as people ask him?” So I went to ask him and found him standing and delivering a sermon, saying this hadith. I said to myself: “I have a she-camel worth more than five awāq, and my servant has another she-camel worth more than five awāq.” So I returned without asking him.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī also transmitted it through this route in Mushkil al-Āthār (1/204–205). I say: This is an authentic chain. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators used by Muslim, apart from the man of Muzaynah. He was a Companion, as the report itself indicates, and his being unidentified causes no harm, for the Companions are upright according to Ahl al-Sunnah.
