It was recorded by al-ʿUqaylī in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (325), al-Kharāʾiṭī in Bad Character Traits (2/5/2), Ibn ʿAdī (272/2), Ibn Shādhān al-Azdī in Selected Benefits (1/118/2), Ibn Bishrān in al-Amālī (144–145), Ibn al-Aʿrābī in his Muʿjam (82/1)—and, through his route, al-Quḍāʿī (42/2)—Abū al-Qāsim al-Mihrānī in Selected Benefits (3/23/1), and al-Bayhaqī as well, through Quṭbah ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Ghanawī, from his father, from Hishām.
Al-ʿUqaylī said: “Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Minhāl is not corroborated in narrating it; it is known only through him. No report on this subject is sound as attributed to the Prophet; rather, it is attributed to ʿĀʾishah herself.” This is what he said. Yet the fact that it has come through several routes as attributed to the Prophet strengthens its attribution to him, though with the wording cited in the heading.
Ibn ʿAdī and al-Bayhaqī considered it defective on account of Quṭbah ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, saying: “He is not strong.” His father, al-ʿAlāʾ, was listed by Ibn Ḥibbān among the trustworthy narrators! Ibn al-Mubārak corroborated him, narrating it from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah with wording close to that cited in the heading. Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (8/188), through Sahl ibn ʿAbd Rabbih, who said: “Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us.” He said: “It is singular among Hishām’s hadiths with this wording.” I have not found any biographical notice for Sahl ibn ʿAbd Rabbih.
Sufyān differed from him and narrated it from Hishām as attributed to the Companion. Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (2/67). Then he and ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī, in al-Tawakkul (245/2), recorded it from Ibn al-Mubārak, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Ward, from a man of the people of Madinah, who said:
