his father, attributed to the Prophet. I say: This is a good chain of transmission. There is some minor criticism of Ibn ʿAṭāʾ and Ibn Jābir, but it is not detrimental, especially since both were corroborated. Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Qays ibn al-Azraq narrated it from Muslim ibn Abī Maryam, from ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muʿāwī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, with the same wording, except that he did not say, “Allah will frighten him,” but added: “Upon him be Allah’s curse and wrath; Allah will accept from him neither an obligatory nor a voluntary deed.” Al-Dūlābī narrated it in al-Kunā (1/132).
Ibn Abī Ḥātim included a biographical notice for this al-Azraq (3/2/287–288) and quoted his father as saying: “A shaykh”—meaning, one whose reports may be used for corroboration. Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd differed from him, narrating: from Muslim ibn Abī Maryam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from al-Sāʾib ibn Khālid—who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. He then cited it in full, including the addition. Al-Ḥarbī narrated it in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (5/146/1), as did al-Dūlābī (1/72) and Aḥmad (4/55 and 56). I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic.
Al-Nasāʾī likewise narrated it in al-Kubrā (folio 89/2), as did al-Baghawī in Mukhtaṣar al-Muʿjam (9/136/2), from whom Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it (16/240/2); also al-Khalʿī in al-Fawāʾid (111/1), Yaʿqūb ibn Aḥmad al-Ṣayrafī in al-Muntaqā min Fawāʾidih (255/2), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (1/372), and Aḥmad through other routes from ʿAṭāʾ with the same wording. Al-Dūlābī also narrated it (1/123), but without the addition.
The hadith also has a supporting report through the narration of Ibn Jurayj, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from Saʿīd ibn Yasār, from some of the Prophet’s Companions, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
