al-Ḥulwānī. Al-Dāraqutnī deemed him reliable, as did Abū Zurʿah, as indicated by his having narrated from him. A number of hadith masters narrated from this al-Ḥulwānī, such as Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, and others; and a number of scholars declared him reliable. Al-Khaṭīb mentioned them in his Tārīkh (5/212–213). Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (10/208): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ, and its narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Mundhirī said in al-Targhīb (2/268): “Al-Bayhaqī narrated it with a chain of transmission that is unobjectionable.”
Then I saw the hadith in Zawāʾid al-Muʿjamayn (p. 465, Meccan Sacred Mosque copy), where it correctly reads, “ʿAtīq ibn Yaʿqūb.” Praise be to Allah for His enabling grace. It likewise appears thus in al-Bayhaqī’s Shuʿab al-Īmān (1/364), through al-Ḥulwānī’s route. I then returned to al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ and found the hadith there as well (1/48/826), correctly recorded. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
2300—“Whoever wishes to experience the sweetness of faith should love a person only for Allah’s sake.”
Al-Ṭayālisī (2495), Aḥmad (2/298, 520), and al-Bazzār (1/50/63) narrated it through various routes from Shuʿbah, who said: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Sulaym informed me; I heard ʿAmr ibn Maymūn narrate from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among those relied upon by the two Shaykhs, apart from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Sulaym, namely Abū Balj al-Fazārī al-Wāsiṭī. He was truthful, though he sometimes erred, as al-Ḥāfiẓ said. Al-Haythamī said concerning the hadith (1/90):
