Aḥmad (1/183), Abū Yaʿlā (1/206), al-Ṭabarānī as well, and al-Ḍiyāʾ (1/345) recorded it through the route of Isrāʾīl, also from Abū Isḥāq, from him. Abū Isḥāq practised tadlīs and suffered from memory deterioration. Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, for this clause has a corroborating report from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim and others; it is cited in al-Irwāʾ (2089). Its preceding portion also has a corroborating report from Ibn Masʿūd in al-Bukhārī and Muslim (1/58).
2299—“Whoever wishes for his record to please him should increase therein his seeking of forgiveness.”
Al-Ḍiyāʾ recorded it in al-Mukhtārah (1/297) through the route of al-Ṭabarānī: Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ḥulwānī narrated to us; ʿAtīq ibn Yaḥyā al-Zubayrī narrated to us; the two sons of al-Mundhir, ʿUbayd Allāh and Muḥammad, narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, attributing it to the Prophet. Al-Ṭabarānī said: “It is narrated from al-Zubayr only through this chain of transmission; ʿAtīq ibn Yaʿqūb alone narrated it.”
I say: Muḥammad ibn al-Mundhir—who was of the lineage of al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām—was mentioned by Ibn Abī Ḥātim (4/1/97), as well as by al-Bukhārī (1/1/243) and Ibn Ḥibbān in al-Thiqāt (7/405), through the narration of Fulayḥ ibn Muḥammad from him, from his father. They added nothing further about him. He is therefore unknown in status, since ʿAtīq also narrated from him. However, Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him elsewhere as well (7/437), reporting his narration from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah and that Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir al-Ḥizāmī narrated from him. He gave him the kunyah Abū Zayd and said: “He sometimes erred.” His brother, ʿUbayd Allāh, corroborated him, as you can see; but I have found no one who mentioned him other than Ibn Ḥibbān in al-Thiqāt (7/152), and that only through this ʿAtīq’s narration from him. As for ʿAtīq ibn Yaḥyā, as it appears in the original, this is an error; the correct name is Ibn Yaʿqūb, as in al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl (3/2/46) and al-Lisān. Among those who narrated from him, he listed Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā
