I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. Abū ʿUshshānah—his name was Ḥayy ibn Yuʾmin—was trustworthy and widely known by his kunyah. ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith was among the narrators relied upon by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Ibn Lahīʿah also corroborated him, saying: “Abū ʿUshshānah narrated it to us.” Aḥmad recorded it (4/144). Ibn Lahīʿah had a poor memory, but ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith’s corroboration of him shows that he had retained it correctly. It also appears that al-Ṭabarānī recorded it through ʿAmr’s route, for al-Haythamī said (3/5–6): “It was narrated by Aḥmad and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr, and al-Ṭabarānī’s narrators are trustworthy.” What I had inferred was subsequently confirmed after the publication of volume 17 of al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Kabīr (300/829). The hadith also has many corroborating reports that confirm its authenticity, including the hadith that follows under no. 2302 and those referred to beneath it; it contains an important addition.
2297—“Whoever honors Allah’s ruler, Allah will honor him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim recorded it in al-Sunnah (99/2), through Ibn Lahīʿah, from Abū Marḥūm, from an unnamed man of Banū ʿAdī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah, from his father, attributing it to the Prophet. I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, owing to the unknown status of the unnamed man and to Ibn Lahīʿah’s weakness. However, it has another route, narrated by Ḥumayd ibn Mihrān: Saʿd ibn Aws narrated to us from Ziyād ibn Kusayb al-ʿAdawī, from Abū Bakrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
