one knows of it except through him.” Ibn ʿAdī said: “He is not known, and the hadith is rejected from al-Aʿmash through this chain of transmission. I know of no other narration from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.”
The third is from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah said—then he related it, similar to al-Shaʿbī’s version. Al-Dānī also narrated it through (Abū) Dāwūd, from ʿUmārah ibn Mihrān, who said: “I heard al-Ḥasan narrate it.” This too is a good mursal report.
The fourth is from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, attributed to the Companion himself. Ibn al-Aʿrābī recorded it in his Muʿjam (195/2), and al-Dānī narrated it from him: Abū Rifāʿah—meaning ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥabīb al-ʿAdawī—narrated to us: Abū Ḥudhayfah narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ʿUthmān ibn al-Ḥārith, from Abū al-Waddāk, from him. The narrators in this chain are trustworthy and known, apart from Abū Rifāʿah, for whom I could find no biographical entry.
The fifth is from Ṭalḥah ibn Abī Ḥadrad, who said that the Prophet said—then he related it. Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Tārīkh (2/2/345): Yaʿqūb informed us; Muḥammad ibn Maʿn informed us, from his uncle, from him. I say: This is an unknown chain of transmission. Al-Bukhārī cited it in Ṭalḥah ibn Abī Ḥadrad’s biographical entry, without mentioning any criticism or commendation of him. Ibn Abī Ḥātim did likewise (2/1/472), whereas Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the trustworthy narrators in al-Thiqāt (4/394). I did not recognize Muḥammad ibn Maʿn’s uncle. Perhaps the wording, “his uncle,” is a corruption of “his father,” for al-Bukhārī and others mentioned that he transmitted from
