al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb (4/144–155). Among the reports he did not cite is the mursal narration of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, who related that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah continues to test His servant until He meets him with no sin remaining upon him.” Ibn Abī al-Dunyā recorded it in al-Marad wa-al-Kaffārāt (87/1): Khālid ibn Khidāsh narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from Zayd, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār. This is a good chain of transmission: all its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, although Khālid ibn Khidāsh has been considered somewhat weak.
He then recorded (88/1), through the route of Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad told me, from ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā, from Abū al-Ḥuwayrith, from Muḥammad ibn Jubayr, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah tests His servant with illness until, by it, He expiates all his sins.” This too is mursal. Its narrators are trustworthy, with the exception of Abū al-Ḥuwayrith, whose name was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Madanī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Truthful, but poor in retention.”
2281 — “Provide for her, for provision must be made, even if it is only half a sāʿ of dates.”
Al-Bayhaqī recorded it (7/257) through the route of ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ al-Sukūnī narrated to us; Muṣʿab ibn Salām narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “When Ḥafṣ ibn al-Mughīrah divorced his wife Fāṭimah, she came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said to her husband, ‘Provide for her.’ He said, ‘I cannot find anything with which to provide for her.’ He said, ‘Provision must be made.’ He said, ‘Provide for her, even if it is only half a sāʿ of dates.’”
