“Then we are ruined!” This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “Yes. Believers are recompensed for it in this world through an affliction that affects their bodies—whatever causes them pain.” Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criterion.

2275 — “There is no servant but that he has a reputation in heaven. If his reputation in heaven is good, a good reputation is established for him on earth; and if his reputation in heaven is evil, an evil reputation is established for him on earth.”

It was recorded by al-Bazzār (p. 326, al-Zawāʾid) and Ibn ʿAdī (58/2), through Abū al-Walīd, from Abū Wakīʿ al-Jarrāḥ ibn Malīḥ, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet.

Ibn ʿAdī said: “I know of no one who narrated it from al-Aʿmash other than Abū Wakīʿ and Saʿīd ibn Bashīr.”

I say: Both have some weakness due to their retention, though Abū Wakīʿ is stronger than him; Muslim included his reports in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but prone to error.” All the remaining narrators are reliable and are among those cited by the two Shaykhs, so the chain of transmission is strong. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (10/271): “It was recorded by al-Bazzār, and its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ.”

Suhayl ibn Abū Ṣāliḥ also narrated it from his father, through the same chain, with similar wording. It was recorded by Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and others, and I have traced it in al-Ḍaʿīfah under hadith 2207.
