told him that he had met ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and said to him, “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, we, the sons of al-Mughīrah, are a people given to pride. Have you heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything concerning that?”
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say,” and he then mentioned it.
Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.” Al-Talkhīṣ states: “According to Muslim’s criterion.” I say: Both are mistaken, for this al-Yamāmī was not narrated from by Muslim. It meets al-Bukhārī’s criterion alone.
2273 — “No man suffers an injury to his body and then waives his claim to it as charity except that Allah expiates for him an equivalent measure of his sins.”
It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/316, 329, and 330), and by his son ʿAbd Allah, from al-Mughīrah, from al-Shaʿbī, that ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say,” and he then mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, provided that al-Mughīrah—namely, Ibn Miqsam al-Ḍabbī—heard it from al-Shaʿbī. He was known for concealment in transmission, but the apparent sense of Imam Aḥmad’s remarks is that he practised such concealment only in his narrations from Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī. Aḥmad said: “Al-Mughīrah’s hadith contains flaws. Most of what he narrated from Ibrāhīm, he had actually heard from Ḥammād, Yazīd ibn al-Walīd, al-Ḥārith al-ʿUklī, ʿUbaydah, and others.” Aḥmad would deem weak only al-Mughīrah’s hadith from Ibrāhīm. For this reason, Abū Ḥātim considered his hadith from al-Shaʿbī strong. His son said:
