from the Mother of the Believers, Umm Salamah, who said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about one who has been transformed: would it have offspring?” He replied: “No one has ever been transformed and then had offspring or descendants.” It was transmitted by Abū Yaʿlā (318 / 2) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (23 / 325 / 746).
Layth—namely, Ibn Abī Sulaym—became confused in his later years. Masʿar and al-Thawrī differed from him in its chain of transmission, reporting it from ʿAlqamah ibn Marthad, from al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yashkurī, from al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd, from ʿAbd Allāh—that is, Ibn Masʿūd—who said: “Monkeys and swine were mentioned in his presence, peace and blessings be upon him, as being among those that had been transformed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Allah does not transform anything and then leave it offspring or descendants. Monkeys and swine existed before that.’” It was transmitted by Muslim (8 / 56–57) and Aḥmad (1 / 390, 413, 433, 445, and 466). Abū al-Aḥwaṣ al-Jushamī also corroborated it from Ibn Masʿūd with the same report. Aḥmad transmitted it (1 / 395, 396–397, and 421).
2265 — “No human being fills any vessel worse than his stomach. A few mouthfuls that keep the son of Adam’s back straight are sufficient for him; but if he must, then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath.”
It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī (3 / 378), Ibn Ḥibbān (1349—Mawārid), al-Ḥākim (4 / 121 and 331), ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak in al-Zuhd (603), Aḥmad (4 / 132), Ibn Saʿd (1 / 410), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (20 / 272 / 644–646), and Ibn ʿAsākir (7 / 307 / 2), through several routes from Yaḥyā ibn Jābir al-Ṭāʾī, who said: I heard al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib al-Kindī say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say—and he then cited it.
