—I heard Anas ibn Mālik attribute it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This is a three-narrator chain, one of Ibn Mājah’s few such chains, but it is weak, for Jubārah and his shaykh, Kathīr, are both weak, as stated in al-Taqrīb. However, it has a corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Tirmidhī (2 / 5) transmitted it through the route of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, from his father, from Ibn Masʿūd, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording. He said: “A good hadith.” This is what he said, perhaps in view of its corroborating reports, for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq was Abū Shaybah al-Wāsiṭī, and he is weak.
Then I returned to Kashf al-Astār ʿan Zawāʾid Musnad al-Bazzār and found the hadith there (fol. 284 / 1), through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ: ʿAṭṭāf narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Thus, the hadith is the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, not Ibn ʿAbbās; what appears in al-Majmaʿ is an error. It is therefore an unobjectionable corroborating report.
2264 — “No community was ever transformed and then had progeny.”
Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Awsaṭ (429): Aḥmad ibn Rushdayn narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sufyān al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to us; Maslamah ibn ʿAlī narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from his father, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: “None narrated it from al-Zuhrī except al-Zubaydī.”
I say: He is trustworthy and precise, but the narrator from him, Maslamah ibn ʿAlī al-Khushanī, is abandoned. Yet the hadith is authentic, for Layth reported: from ʿAlqamah ibn Marthad, from al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd
