in which there is weakness, as I have explained in my notes on it. Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated in al-Kabīr, through Ibrāhīm ibn al-Muhājir al-Bajalī: A man asked ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd to recite to him while the imam was delivering the Friday sermon. ʿAbd Allah did not speak to him, but once he had completed the prayer, he said to him: “What you asked about is your share of the Friday prayer.” This al-Bajalī was truthful but had poor retention.
He then narrated, with an authentic chain of transmission, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: “It is sufficient idle talk for you to say to your companion, ‘Listen attentively,’ once the imam has come out for the Friday prayer.” A similar incident between Abū Dharr and Ubayy ibn Kaʿb is recorded by Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Ṭaḥāwī, Aḥmad, and others. You may find it in al-Targhīb (1/257–258) and al-Majmaʿ (2/186). There is no contradiction between the reports, since the incident may have occurred more than once, as is clear.
2252 — “If you keep hair, then care for it.”
ʿAbd al-Razzāq recorded it in al-Muṣannaf (11/270/20516), from Maʿmar, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jaḥshī, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Abū Qatādah: and he mentioned it. He said: “Abū Qatādah, I believe, used to comb it twice each day.”
Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it in Shuʿab al-Īmān (2/265/2), through ʿAbd al-Razzāq, adding to the chain after Saʿīd: “from their shaykhs.” If this addition is authentic, then the hadith has a connected chain; otherwise, it is mursal, because this Saʿīd was a Successor who narrated from some of the Companions. Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy, and al-Nasāʾī said: “There is no harm in him.”
