the censure of Iraq, as Professor Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Munajjid did in his introduction to Faḍāʾil al-Shām wa-Dimashq. I refuted him in my source-study of its hadiths and demonstrated that this hadith is one of the Prophet’s miracles of foreknowledge, peace and blessings be upon him. See the eighth hadith therein.
2247 — “When he stood in prayer, he would hold his left hand with his right.”
It was recorded by Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī in al-Maʿrifah (3/121), and through his route by al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (2/28), and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (22/9/1) through another route: Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us: Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us: ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil narrated to me from his father that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would ... And I saw ʿAlqamah doing so.
Al-Fasawī said: “Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr was a trustworthy Kūfan.” I say: Other imams also declared him trustworthy, and the rest of the narrators are trustworthy and among Muslim’s narrators; thus, the chain is authentic.
Al-Nasāʾī (1/141) also recorded it through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, from Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAnbarī and Qays ibn Sulaym al-ʿAnbarī, who said: ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil narrated to us the same report in similar wording, but without the action of ʿAlqamah.
Aḥmad (4/316) and Ibn Abī Shaybah, in al-Muṣannaf (1/390), also narrated it: Wakīʿ narrated to us: Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us the report in abridged form, with the wording: “I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placing his right hand over his left in prayer.” He did not mention standing. Al-Baghawī likewise narrated it in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (3/30) through another route from Wakīʿ. Similarly, Aḥmad (4/316–319) narrated it through another route from Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, without mentioning standing.
