I say: The wording of the addition in his version is: “In it are nine-tenths of disbelief, and in it is the incurable disease.” Perhaps it was this addition that he meant by its being uniquely transmitted. Otherwise, the hadith containing the earlier addition was corroborated by Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—namely, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd—in the collections of Aḥmad and Ibn ʿAsākir. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, apart from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ, who is trustworthy despite some weakness in him, as is indicated by al-Ḥāfiẓ’s statement in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful; he has some weakness.”
I therefore have reservations regarding the establishment of this addition, since ʿAbd al-Raḥmān alone narrated it to the exclusion of all the other transmitters—especially since al-Fasawī related it from Ibn Masʿūd and ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with them both, as a report attributed only to the Companions. It does not appear to me that it carries the implicit ruling of a report attributed to the Prophet. And Allah knows best.
Abū ʿUbayd, the chamberlain of Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, also corroborated him from Nāfiʿ with this report, except that he said, “Iraq and Egypt.” It was recorded by Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qaṭṭān in his Hadith collection (fol. 59/2), Abū Umayyah al-Ṭarsūsī in Musnad Ibn ʿUmar (fol. 207/1–2), and Ibn ʿAsākir (1/124–125), through the route of Muḥammad ibn Yazīd ibn Sinān al-Ruhāwī, from his father, who said: Abū Razīn al-Filasṭīnī related to me from him.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. Abū ʿUbayd is trustworthy, but I have not identified Abū Razīn, who narrated from him. Al-Dhahabī included him in al-Muqtaṇā fī al-Kunā on the basis of this narration, without naming him. Al-Ruhāwī is not strong, as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated; thus, the mention of Egypt in this route is rejected. Success is granted by Allah.
It has a corroborating report, narrated by Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kaysān, from his father, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet, similar to the hadith cited in the heading. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (12/84/12553).
