so the chain of transmission is good. Nāfiʿ also corroborated it from Ibn ʿUmar with the same wording, but did not mention Makkah.
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (12/384/13422) and al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (1/215/1/3851), through the route of Ismāʿīl ibn Masʿūd: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn informed us, from his father, from him. I say: This too is a good chain of transmission. Concerning this ʿUbayd Allāh, al-Bukhārī said in al-Tārīkh (3/1/388), “He is known in hadith.” Ibn Abī Ḥātim (2/2/322) reported from his father: “His hadith is sound.”
Azhar ibn Saʿd, Abū Bakr al-Sammān, also corroborated it: Ibn ʿAwn informed us with the same report, except that he said, “our Najd” instead of “our Iraq”; the meaning is the same. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1037 and 7094), al-Tirmidhī (3948), Ibn Ḥibbān (7257—al-Iḥsān), al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (14/206/4006)—and they declared it authentic—as well as by Aḥmad (2/118) and Ibn ʿAsākir (1/122–124).
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ also corroborated it from Nāfiʿ with the same wording, except that he said, “our East” instead of “our Iraq,” and added at its end: “Therein are nine-tenths of evil.” Aḥmad (2/90), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (1/102/2/2087), and Ibn ʿAsākir (1/125) recorded it. Al-Ṭabarānī said: “No one narrated it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ except Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb; Ibn Wahb alone transmitted it from him.”
