Hizam.
Second: al-Suyuti. When he included it in both al-Jami' al-Saghir and al-Jami' al-Kabir, he attributed it only to al-Tabarani. This is a serious omission, since it gives the impression that it is not found in the two Sahihs; otherwise, he would have attributed it to them as well. This led some commentators—al-Munawi, as will follow—to declare the hadith weak.
Al-Suyuti also made another error, which al-Munawi followed him in: he cited the hadith without its second half, thus giving the impression that al-Tabarani had likewise reported it in that form. In fact, al-Tabarani reported it with both halves, as you can see.
Third: al-Munawi, who said in his commentary Fayd al-Qadir: “The author, al-Suyuti, indicated that it is authentic, but it is not as he said, for al-Haythami said...” He then quoted al-Haythami’s preceding remarks. This is among the gravest errors I have seen from al-Munawi. It stems either from his weak retention or from his failure to recall that the hadith is found in the two Sahihs through routes other than this one from Abu Salih. In such a case, it is impermissible to declare the hadith weak—especially when those who authenticated it have done so—as is well known to specialists in this field.
Now that you know this, Abu Salih was corroborated by Urwah ibn al-Zubayr in al-Bukhari and elsewhere, and by Musa ibn Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah in Muslim and elsewhere. Both reports are documented in Irwa' al-Ghalil, together with numerous corroborating reports from Abu Hurayrah and others; consult them there, if you wish (3/316–319).
Strangely, al-Tabarani also reported Urwah’s corroborating narration (3092), and al-Haythami likewise included it in al-Majma' (3/98), even though it is found in al-Bukhari. He claimed that al-Tabarani’s version contains an addition not found in al-Bukhari, namely: “Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will grant him chastity; and whoever seeks independence, Allah will enrich him.” Yet it is also found in al-Bukhari, as the eminent brother Hamdi al-Salafi pointed out in his annotation
