2237 — “He taught it to me as: ‘Charities are only for the poor and the needy,’ and he elongated it.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (The Great Lexicon) (8677) through Sa'id ibn Mansur, who said: Shihab ibn Khirash narrated to me; Musa ibn Yazid al-Kindi narrated to me, saying: Ibn Mas'ud was teaching the Quran to a man, and the man recited, “Charities are only for the poor and the needy” (1), without elongation. Ibn Mas'ud said, “This is not how the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught it to me.” He asked, “How did he teach it to you, O Abu Abd al-Rahman?” He replied by citing the above.
I say: The narrators of this chain of transmission have been declared reliable, apart from Musa ibn Yazid al-Kindi, whom I have not been able to identify. Al-Hafiz al-Mizzi did not mention him among Ibn Khirash’s teachers in al-Tahdhib (The Refinement). Al-Haythami mentioned him in al-Majma' (7/155), through al-Tabarani, but there it appears as “Mas'ud ibn Yazid al-Kindi.” He then remarked, “Its narrators are trustworthy!” In Ibn Hibban’s al-Thiqat (Reliable Narrators) (3/260), it states: “Mas'ud ibn Yazid: he narrates from Ibn Umar, and Muhammad ibn al-Fadl narrates from him.”
I say: It appears that he is the same person. Al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim did not include him in their respective books. I then found that al-Hafiz Ibn al-Jazari cited this hadith in al-Nashr fi al-Qira'at al-Ashr (Publication on the Ten Quranic Readings) (1/313), with his chain of transmission to al-Tabarani through the same route, and it reads: “Mas'ud ibn Yazid al-Kindi.” This shows that “Musa” in al-Tabarani is a corruption of “Mas'ud.” And Allah knows best. Al-Jazari then said:
