was also an error—perhaps a typographical one that al-Aʿẓamī did not notice in his commentary on al-Kashf. The correct form is Ibn ʿAmr, with the ʿayn vowelled with a fatḥah.

The hadith is authentic, for it has many corroborating reports, as I have explained in al-Taʿlīq al-Raghīb ʿalā al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb. One of them was cited there (3/4), on the authority of Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, and Bahshal al-Wāsiṭī transmitted it in Tārīkh Wāsiṭ (p. 146).

The hadith also has another chain, narrated by Sulaymān ibn Kaysān, from Hārūn ibn Rāshid, from Abū Hurayrah, with similar wording. Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh transmitted it in his Musnad (4/42/2). Concerning this Hārūn, al-Dhahabī said: “He narrated from a Successor from Abū Hurayrah. He is unknown, though Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the reliable narrators.”

2233 — “I find for him, from this expedition, nothing in this world or the Hereafter except the dinars he stipulated.”

Abū Dāwūd (1/396) and al-Ḥākim (2/112)—from whom al-Bayhaqī also narrated it (6/331)—reported it through ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Daylamī, who related that Yaʿlā ibn Munyah said:

“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, announced a military expedition. I was an elderly man and had no servant, so I sought to hire someone to take my place, agreeing to give him my share. I found a man, but when the time for departure drew near, he came to me and said, ‘I do not know what the shares are or how much my share may amount to. Fix an amount for me, whether there is a share or not.’ So I stipulated three dinars for him. When the spoils arrived, I intended to give him his share, but then recalled the dinars. I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him about the matter.” He then mentioned the foregoing words. Al-Ḥākim said:
