if they deem what has been offered to them too insignificant.” Al-Bayhaqi transmitted it (7/279–280), as did Ahmad (3/371).
I say: This ‘Ubayd Allah is weak, as al-Hafiz decisively stated. It has also been narrated from Jabir through two other routes, but both are defective; for this reason, I included it in al-Da‘ifah (5379).
2221 — “Whatever I give you or withhold from you, I am only a custodian, placing it where I have been commanded.”
Abu Dawud (2/25) and Ahmad (2/314) transmitted it from ‘Abd al-Razzaq, who said: Ma‘mar informed us, from Hammam ibn Munabbih, who said: This is what Abu Hurayrah related to us: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this. I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim. It was corroborated by ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi ‘Amrah, from Abu Hurayrah, with the wording: “By Allah, I neither give you nor withhold from you; I am only a distributor, placing it where I have been commanded.” Al-Bukhari (6/165, Fath) and Ahmad (2/482) transmitted it.
2222 — “No one has suffered harm for Allah’s sake as I have suffered.”
Al-Daylami (4/51) transmitted it through Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Tarsusi: Ishaq ibn Mansur narrated to us; Isra’il narrated to us, from Jabir, from Ibn Buraydah, from his father, who attributed it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. Its narrators have been deemed trustworthy, apart from Jabir—namely, Ibn Yazid al-Ju‘fi—who is weak. Abu Nu‘aym also narrated it in al-Hilyah (6/233), from Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Hisham, who said: Waki‘ narrated to us.
