“...and whoever commits any of that and is punished for it, it is an expiation for him...” It was recorded by the two Shaykhs and others.
Note: In the first occurrence of this in al-Mustadrak, the wording appears as “Tubbaʿ anbiyaʾ (Tubbaʿ was among the prophets),” and I believe this to be an error by one of the copyists of al-Mustadrak, or by the printer. The correct wording is what we have established: “Tubbaʿ nabiyyan (Tubbaʿ was a prophet).” This is how al-Bayhaqi narrated it from al-Hakim; it is likewise found in the narrations of the others from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, as well as in the narration of Adam ibn Abi Iyas. In al-Fath al-Kabir (3/78), attributed to one of al-Hakim’s two narrations, “Uzayr” appears in place of “Luqman.” This is an error, contrary to both of al-Hakim’s narrations and to the narrations of the others—unless it refers to Ibn ʿAsakir’s statement at the end of the hadith: “Another said: Uzayr.” I do not know whom he meant, but this was reported in the supporting narration to which reference has already been made. And Allah knows best.
2218 — “He is not arrogant who eats with his servant, rides a donkey through the marketplaces, and hobbles a sheep in order to milk it.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 550), and al-Daylami (4/33), from Ibn Lal in a suspended form; both from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah, from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this. I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are narrators of the Sahih collections, except that Muhammad ibn ʿAmr was only cited alongside another narrator.
As for al-Manawi’s statement in his Fayd al-Qadir: “The compiler indicated that it is good. Its chain includes ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Uwaysi, whom al-Dhahabi listed among the weak narrators, and Abu Dawud said: ‘Weak.’ Concerning ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad, Ibn Hibban said that evidence can no longer be based on him”—I say: There are two objections to this:
