ʿAdī said: “I know it only through Arṭāh, from Ibn Jurayj.” I say: This Arṭāh is Ibn al-Mundhir, a Basran whose kunyah was Abū Ḥātim. Ibn ʿAdī cited two hadiths of his, this being one of them; regarding the other, he identified an error in its chain of transmission. He then said: “He has hadiths other than those I have mentioned, and some of them contain error and confusion.”
I have found another chain for it: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Tammām narrated it from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, with the wording: “No person has bestowed a greater favor upon me, in family and wealth, than Abū Bakr.” Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it (11/348/11974). This ʿUbayd Allāh is weak.
It has a third chain, narrated by Layth from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās, with similar wording; and a fourth, narrated by Jarīr: I heard Yaʿlā ibn Ḥakīm, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, with the wording: “No person has conferred a greater favor upon me, with his person and wealth, than Abū Bakr ibn Abī Quḥāfah. Were I to take an intimate friend…”—the hadith.
It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (467), al-Ṭabarānī (11938), and Ibn Ḥibbān (6821—al-Iḥsān). It also has a corroborating report from the hadith of Abū Ḥafṣ al-ʿAbdī, from Mālik ibn Dīnār, from Anas, with similar wording. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated both of them. There are also two other sound, concise corroborating reports from Abū Hurayrah and ʿĀʾishah, documented in “Hadiths Concerning the Problem of Poverty” (no. 13).
