2205 — “Laylat al-Qadr is the twenty-seventh or the twenty-ninth night. On that night, the angels on earth are more numerous than the pebbles.”
It was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī in his Musnad (2545), and from him by Aḥmad (2/519), as well as by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Ṣaḥīḥ (223/2), through ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān, from Qatādah, from Abū Maymūnah, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet. I say: This chain is good. Al-Ḥāfiẓ made no comment on it in al-Fatḥ (4/209).
2206 — “On the Day of Resurrection, those who have been spared affliction will wish that their skins had been cut with shears, because of the reward they see bestowed upon those who were afflicted.”
It was reported by al-Tirmidhī (2404), al-Khaṭīb in al-Tārīkh (4/400), and likewise Ibn ʿAsākir (9/9/1), through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mighrāʾ, who said: al-Aʿmash reported to us from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, attributed to the Prophet. Al-Tirmidhī said: “It is a singular hadith; we know it through this chain only by way of this route.”
I say: It has two defects. The first is Abū al-Zubayr’s ambiguous use of the transmission formula “from,” for he practised tadlīs (concealing a defect in the chain), as has been mentioned repeatedly. The other is that although ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mighrāʾ was truthful, the scholars criticized his narrations from al-Aʿmash, as stated in al-Taqrīb. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also reported it through his route, as cited in al-Targhīb (4/146), which says: “Al-Ṭabarānī also reported it in al-Kabīr from Ibn Masʿūd, attributed to the Companion, and its chain contains an unnamed man.” He then mentioned a corroborating report from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
