I do not know how he came to make this statement, for it is a sheer error! I then found another route for it from Ibn ʿUmar, recorded by al-ʿUqaylī in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (348): Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Balkhī narrated to us; Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Ḥabīb ibn Ghālib—thus it appears in the original—narrated to us, from al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab, from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, from Ibn ʿUmar, who related it from the Prophet. He said: “Al-Bukhārī said: ‘Ghālib ibn Ḥabīb, Abū Ghālib al-Yashkurī, from al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab: rejected in hadith.’”
I say: Al-Bukhārī likewise listed him in al-Tārīkh al-Ṣaghīr (184). However, in the chain of this hadith, as well as in another hadith cited by al-ʿUqaylī from another of his shaykhs from Qutaybah, the name appears reversed as “Ḥabīb ibn Ghālib.” Al-ʿUqaylī said: “Al-Bukhārī’s biographical entry is thus under ‘Ghālib ibn Ḥabīb.’ Yet these two shaykhs of mine narrated to us from Qutaybah—each of them being a precise hadith scholar—and both named him ‘Ḥabīb ibn Ghālib.’ I do not think the error came from anyone but al-Bukhārī. These two hadiths have also been narrated through chains other than this one, by a route sounder than this.” Al-Dhahabī said: “He is unknown.”
2201 — “People from my community will recite the Quran, yet they will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes through its prey.”
Ibn Mājah (1/73), Aḥmad (1/256), his son as well, and Abū Yaʿlā (2/623) recorded it from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from Simāk, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who related it from the Prophet. I say: Its chain of transmission is good and meets Muslim’s criteria. The hadith has many corroborating reports in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections and elsewhere, narrated from a number of the Companions, some of which I have
