and his shaykh, Humayd—namely, Humayd al-Ṭawīl—is one of the narrators cited by the Two Shaykhs. Yazīd ibn Mihrān is unquestionably trustworthy. Al-ʿAbbās ibn Jaʿfar—who is al-ʿAbbās ibn Abī Ṭālib—is trustworthy. He has a biographical entry in Tārīkh Baghdād (12/141–142) and elsewhere. He died in 258 AH. Thus, the chain of transmission is authentic. Al-Haythamī said (10/147): “Its narrators are trustworthy.”
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (8/67), through Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdī, from Humayd, from Thābit, from Anas, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, visited a Muslim man who had wasted away until he was like a chick. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him: “Had you been supplicating for something, or asking Allah for it?” He replied: “Yes. I used to say: ‘O Allah, whatever You would punish me with in the Hereafter, hasten it for me in this world!’” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Glory be to Allah! You cannot bear it—or are unable to bear it. Why did you not say: ‘O Allah, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire’?” Anas said: He then supplicated to Allah for him, and Allah healed him.
2198 — “Let each of you refrain from asking people for anything, even a tooth-stick.”
Al-Suyūṭī cited it in al-Ziyādah as reported by al-Bayhaqī from Maymūn ibn Abī Shabīb as a mursal report. Ibn Abī Ḥātim also cited it in al-ʿIlal (1/216), through ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muslim, from al-Aʿmash, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet. He said: “My father said: ‘This is how ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated it, whereas Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from al-Ḥakam’”
