al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but prone to error.” I say: In sum, the hadith under discussion is good; indeed, it is authentic on account of these two corroborating reports. And Allah knows best.
2196 — “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and honour our elders.”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (1/349) through ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid, from Zurbī, who said: I heard Anas ibn Mālik say: “An elderly man came seeking the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but the people were slow to make room for him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said…” He then cited it and said: “A singular hadith; Zurbī has rejected hadiths from Anas ibn Mālik and others.”
I say: In al-Taqrīb, he is deemed weak, and the same is said of ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid. However, the hadith is authentic, for it has a corroborating narration through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, attributed to the Prophet with this wording. Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (358), as did Aḥmad (2/207), through this chain, with the wording: “and recognizes the right due to our elders.” It is also a version recorded by al-Bukhārī (355). Its chain is good were it not for Ibn Isḥāq’s use of the ambiguous “from” formula. It has another authentic chain from Ibn ʿAmr with the latter wording, which I have cited in al-Targhīb (1/66).
