that he saw a man wearing a brass ring on his upper arm. He asked him, “What is this?” The man replied, “It was prescribed for me for al-wāhinah, an ailment of the upper arm.” He said, “If you were to die while it was upon you, you would be left to it.” He then quoted the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, citing the hadith above.
Al-Bazzār does not include this account, and he said: “We know of no narration from ʿImrān except through this route, and Abū Ḥamzah was a Basran narrator who is acceptable.” I say: In al-Taqrīb, he is described as: “Truthful; he was criticized because of his views on divine decree.” Thus, the chain is good were it not for al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī’s use of the ambiguous formula ‘from,’ for he practised tadlīs, as well as the disagreement over whether his having heard from him is established at all.
However, it is corroborated by the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording. Al-Bazzār also recorded it, as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ (p. 393—Ḥaram), through Zamʿah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Salamah ibn Wahrām, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording. I say: Al-Bazzār stated: “We know it only through this route, with this chain of transmission.” Zamʿah is weak, as is Salamah.
It is also corroborated by the hadith of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording. Al-Ṭabarānī also recorded it (p. 501), as did Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (4/195), through ʿĪsā ibn Muslim Abū Dāwūd, from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿĀmir, who said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “I entered the mosque while the Commander of the Believers, ʿAlī, was on the pulpit, reciting the above hadith and attributing it to the Prophet in the course of an account.” Al-Ṭabarānī said: “It is not narrated from ʿAlī except through this chain of transmission; ʿĪsā alone narrated it.” I say: He is weak in hadith, as is ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿĀmir—the Thaʿlabī—as stated in
