“Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger have forbidden you wine and its price; they have forbidden you the eating of carrion and its price; and they have forbidden you swine, eating it, and its price. He said: ‘Trim the moustaches and let the beards grow, and do not walk in the marketplaces unless you are wearing waistcloths. Whoever follows a way other than ours is not of us.’”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Kabīr (3/118/1), through Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥammānī, from Yūsuf ibn Maymūn, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās. This is a weak chain of transmission. Yūsuf ibn Maymūn—al-Ṣabbāgh—was declared “weak” by al-Ḥāfiẓ. I say: Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥammānī is also somewhat weak. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (5/169): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ, and it contains Yūsuf ibn Maymūn, whom Aḥmad, al-Bukhārī, and a group of scholars declared weak, while Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy. The rest of its narrators are trustworthy.”
As for the second clause, “Do not imitate the Jews or the Christians,” it has been authentically reported in the hadiths of Abū Hurayrah and al-Zubayr; both are cited in The Muslim Woman’s Hijab (p. 96). The remainder of it is supported by a hadith of Jābir, attributed to the Prophet, which is likewise cited in the aforementioned source (p. 98), and whose documentation was previously given under no. 1783.
2195 — “Whoever seeks omens, or has omens sought on his behalf; practices soothsaying, or has it practiced on his behalf; or practices magic, or has it practiced on his behalf, is not of us.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it (p. 169, al-Zawāʾid), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (folio 73/1—an excerpt from it), through Isḥāq ibn al-Rabīʿ Abū Ḥamzah al-ʿAṭṭār, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn:
