“If seven fat pregnant she-camels were taken and thrown from the edge of Hell, they would not reach its end in seventy years.” Al-Ḥākim made no comment on it. Al-Dhahabī said: “I say: Its chain is acceptable.” This is what he said, although ʿUqbah is unknown, as stated in al-Mīzān.

The second is from Khālid ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAdawī, who said: ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān addressed us, praising Allah and extolling Him. Then he said: “To proceed: We have been told that a stone is cast from the edge of Hell and falls through it for seventy years without reaching its bottom.” Muslim (8/215) and Aḥmad (4/174) narrated it. Al-Tirmidhī (2578) also narrated it through al-Ḥasan, who said: ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān said from this pulpit of ours—the pulpit of Basra—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said—then he mentioned something similar to it. He said: “We do not know that al-Ḥasan heard from ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān. Rather, ʿUtbah came to Basra during the time of ʿUmar, while al-Ḥasan was born with two years remaining of ʿUmar’s caliphate.”

The third is from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, as a report attributed to the Prophet: “Wail is a valley in Hell in which the disbeliever falls for seventy autumns before reaching its bottom.” Al-Tirmidhī (3164) and Aḥmad (3/75) narrated it through Ibn Lahīʿah, from Darrāj, from Abū al-Haytham, from him, with this wording. Al-Tirmidhī said: “It is a singular hadith; we know it as a report attributed to the Prophet only through the hadith of Ibn Lahīʿah.” I say: This is what he said, but others have known it through a route other than his, for ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith corroborated him in narrating it from Darrāj, with this wording. Ibn Ḥibbān (2610) narrated it.
