I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. Al-ʿĀliyah bint Sabīʿ was narrated from only by her son, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mālik ibn Ḥudhāfah; and no one narrated from him except Kathīr ibn Farqad. Al-Dhahabī said: “There is unknownness in him.” However, the hadith has a strong supporting report from Ibn ʿAbbās, similar in meaning, which includes: “Is there not in water and qaraẓ that which purifies it?”
Al-Dāraquṭnī and al-Bayhaqī recorded it through the route of ʿAmr ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṭāriq: Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us, from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet. This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Qaraẓ refers to the leaves of the salam tree, which are used for tanning.
2164 — “If anyone were to escape the compression of the grave, this boy would have escaped it.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/193/1): Al-Ḥusayn ibn Isḥāq al-Tustarī narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah informed us; Wakīʿ informed us, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thumāmah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Anas, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, from Abū Ayyūb: “A boy was buried, and the Messenger of Allah said: ...” He then cited it.
I say: This is a chain whose narrators are all trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from this al-Tustarī. Al-Dhahabī included a biographical notice on him in al-Aʿlām (14/57), based on reports from a group who narrated from him. He died in 290 AH, and al-Dhahabī said: “He was a widely travelled hadith memorizer, and al-Ṭabarānī narrated extensively from him.” As for al-Haythamī’s statement (3/47):
