2162 — “If ten Jews were to believe in me, not a single Jew would remain on earth without embracing Islam.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded it (6/220—Fatḥ), as did Ibn al-Ḍurays in Aḥādīth Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm al-Azdī (4/2): Qurrah ibn Khālid narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn narrated to us from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said it. This is Ibn al-Ḍurays’s wording; al-Bukhārī’s wording is abbreviated: “...the Jews would believe in me.”
Abū Hilāl corroborated him, saying: Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn narrated to us likewise. His wording is: “If ten of the Jewish rabbis were to believe in me, every Jew on the face of the earth would believe in me.” Aḥmad recorded it (2/346, 363, and 416). Abū Hilāl—whose name was Muḥammad ibn Sulaym al-Rāsibī—was truthful, though he had some weakness. Al-Manāwī attributed the hadith to Muslim, but I have not found it in his work.
2163 — “Why did you not take its hide? Water and qaraẓ (acacia pods used in tanning) would purify it.”
Abū Dāwūd recorded it (4126), as did al-Nasāʾī (2/191), al-Dāraquṭnī (p. 17), al-Bayhaqī (1/19), and Aḥmad (6/334), from Kathīr ibn Farqad, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mālik ibn Ḥudhāfah, from his mother al-ʿĀliyah bint Sabīʿ, who said: “I had some sheep at Uḥud, and they died. I went to Maymūnah, the Prophet’s wife, and mentioned this to her. She said: ‘Why did you not take their skins and make use of them?’ I said: ‘Would that be lawful?’ She said: ‘Yes. Some men of Quraysh passed by the Messenger of Allah dragging a sheep of theirs as large as a donkey. The Messenger of Allah said to them: “Why did you not take its hide?” They said: “It is carrion.” The Messenger of Allah said: “Water and qaraẓ would purify it.”’
