In another narration recorded by him (6/362), through Zā’idah, from Sulaymān—that is, al-Aʿmash—from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, from Umm Mubashshir, she said: “Ḥāṭib’s servant came and said, ‘By Allah, Ḥāṭib will not enter Paradise!’ The Messenger of Allah said: ‘You are lying. He witnessed Badr and al-Ḥudaybiyyah.’”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to Muslim’s criteria. Abū al-Zubayr corroborated him, reporting that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: Umm Mubashshir informed me that she heard the Prophet say in the presence of Ḥafṣah: “None of the Companions of the Tree—those who pledged allegiance beneath it—will enter the Fire, Allah willing.” She said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” So he rebuked her. Then Ḥafṣah said: “There is none of you except that he will come to it.” (1) The Prophet said: “Allah, Exalted is He, has said: ‘Then We shall save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers therein, on their knees.’” (2)
It was recorded by Muslim (7/169), and narrated in abridged form by Aḥmad (3/350), and in full by Ibn Saʿd (2/100–101), through Wahb ibn Munabbih, from Jābir, with this wording. Al-Marwazī also recorded it in Zawāʾid al-Zuhd (1417), through Abū al-Zubayr.
In another version that Muslim narrated from him: “One of Ḥāṭib’s slaves came to the Messenger of Allah complaining about Ḥāṭib, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Ḥāṭib will surely enter the Fire!’ The Messenger of Allah said: ‘You are lying. He will not enter it, for he witnessed Badr and al-Ḥudaybiyyah.’” Aḥmad also recorded it (3/325 and 349).
Khidāsh differed from them, narrating it from Abū al-Zubayr as a hadith attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Everyone who pledged allegiance beneath the Tree will enter Paradise, except the owner of the red camel.”
