I say: This is a good chain of transmission; its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections. There is some disagreement concerning Maḥbūb—this being his nickname; his actual name was Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Hilāl—but the stronger view is that his hadith is good. Al-Bukhārī recorded one hadith from him.
2147 — “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the woman who scratches her face, the one who tears her neckline, and the one who cries out, ‘Woe and destruction!’”
It was recorded by Ibn Mājah, no. 1585, and Ibn Ḥibbān, no. 737, from Abū Usāmah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir, from Makḥūl and al-Qāsim, from Abū Umāmah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed ...
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy transmitters used by Muslim, apart from al-Qāsim, who is Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dimashqī, a companion of Abū Umāmah. His hadith is good, and Makḥūl, who is trustworthy, was joined with him. Thus, the hadith ought to have been judged authentic, were it not that he practised tadlīs and narrated it using an ambiguous “from” formula.
2148 — “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the male and female grave robber.”
It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī (8/270) through Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ and Abū Qutaybah, who said: Mālik narrated to us, from Abū al-Rijāl, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed ...
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to al-Bukhārī’s criteria. Perhaps he did not record it because of the disagreement regarding its chain. Al-Bayhaqī recorded it through al-Shāfiʿī: Mālik informed us, from Abū al-Rijāl, from his mother, ʿAmrah bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ... He said: “This is mursal, and it is the correct version.” Ibn al-Turkumānī challenged this, saying: “It should be noted that Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ is trustworthy; al-Bukhārī and Muslim, as well as others, recorded from him; and Abū Qutaybah, Salm ibn Qutaybah ...”
