al-Abaḥ, from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, from Anas, with a similar wording. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ (p. 314—the Meccan Sanctuary manuscript of its supplementary material). This chain too is weak. Regarding ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd al-Abaḥ, Ibn Abī Ḥātim (3/1/111) reported from his father: “He is not strong.” Al-Bukhārī said in al-Mīzān: “His hadith is rejected.”
In sum, the hadith is good, at the very least, when all its routes are considered together. And Allah, Exalted is He, knows best.
2138 — “He would place his chest, face, forearms, and palms between the Corner and the door”—that is, during tawaf.
Abū Dāwūd (1/297), Ibn Mājah (2/225–226), al-Bayhaqī (5/93), ʿAbd al-Razzāq in al-Muṣannaf (9043), and al-Aṣbahānī in al-Targhīb (135/1) narrated it from al-Muthannā ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, who said: “I performed tawaf with ʿAbd Allāh. When we came to the rear of the Kaʿbah, I said to him, ‘Will you not seek refuge?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire.’ Then he proceeded until he touched the Black Stone. He stood between the Corner and the door and placed his chest ... Then he said, ‘This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, do it.’”
I say: Al-Muthannā is weak. ʿAbd al-Razzāq added, after the words “from his father,” “from his grandfather”; but the first version is more correct. ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim corroborated him: Ibn Jurayj informed us, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, who said, “I was performing tawaf ...” and he related something similar.
