“It was black and square, made of striped woollen cloth.”
It was reported by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī (1680), and Aḥmad (4/297). Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith.” I say: It is good only on account of corroborating evidence, for Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, the client, is unknown, and Abū Yaʿqūb—whose name was Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm—is weak.
It has another supporting narration, related by ʿĀṣim from al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥassān, who said: “I came to Medina and saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, standing on the pulpit, with Bilāl standing before him, girded with a sword; and there was a black banner. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ They said, ‘This is ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who has arrived from a military expedition.’” Ibn Mājah also reported it, as did Aḥmad (3/481), through Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, from ʿĀṣim ibn Abī al-Najūd, with this chain.
In a version reported by Aḥmad through Salām ibn Sulaymān al-Naḥwī, Abū al-Mundhir, he said: “ʿĀṣim ibn Abī al-Najūd narrated to us, from Abū Wāʾil, from al-Ḥārith,” with this report. Thus, he inserted Abū Wāʾil between them. Al-Tirmidhī likewise reported it (3269 and 3270), without commenting on it. I say: Its chain is good in the other version—the correct one—as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated in al-Tahdhīb.
- “He had a wrap dyed with wars and saffron, which he would wear in turn among his wives. When it was the night of one of them, she would sprinkle it with water; and when it was the night of another, she would sprinkle it with water; and when it was the night of another, she would sprinkle it with water.”
Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī reported it in his History (13/320), from Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl: “ʿUmārah ibn Zādhān narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas,” who said: He then mentioned it as a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
