“Truthful, but prone to error.” Al-ʿIrāqī, in Takhrīj al-Iḥyāʾ (2/324), attributed this hadith only to al-Nasāʾī in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah and graded it good.
2098 — “He had a donkey called ʿUfayr.”
It was reported by al-Ṭaḥāwī in Mushkil al-Āthār (1/478), Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (1/492), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (3/71/1), through Yazīd ibn ʿAṭā Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, from Abū ʿUbaydah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, from his father, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I say: This is a weak, interrupted chain of transmission. Abū ʿUbaydah did not hear from his father. Yazīd ibn ʿAṭā—al-Yashkurī—is weak in hadith transmission, as stated in al-Taqrīb.
However, it is corroborated by the hadith of Salamah ibn al-Faḍl, who said: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to me, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazanī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zurayr al-Ghāfiqī, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, that “the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to ride a donkey named ʿUfayr.” Aḥmad reported it (no. 886). Its chain of transmission is weak because Ibn Isḥāq related it with an ambiguous ‘from’ transmission, and because of the weakness of Salamah ibn al-Faḍl. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Truthful, but makes many mistakes.”
As for Shaykh Aḥmad Shākir, he said in his commentary on al-Musnad: “Its chain of transmission is authentic!” I say: This is due to the leniency for which he was known, especially in his accepting Ibn
