supports this, for he was about twenty-five years old when Anas died. Moreover, he was not known to practise concealment in transmission, so his narration from Anas is presumed to be connected according to the majority. And Allah knows best.
It is further supported by the hadith of Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with the wording: “He was merciful and gentle.” It was reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, as well as others.
2095 — “He was broad-armed, with long eyelashes, broad-shouldered; when he came forward, he did so with his whole body, and when he turned away, he did so with his whole body. He was neither obscene nor one who deliberately used obscene speech, nor was he loud in the marketplaces.”
Al-Ṭayālisī (2413, according to its arrangement), Aḥmad (2/328 and 448), Ibn Saʿd (1/414), and al-Bayhaqī (1/181) reported it from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, from Ṣāliḥ, the client of al-Tawʾamah, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Regarding this Ṣāliḥ, al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Truthful, though he became confused in his later years.” Ibn ʿAdī said: “There is no issue with the narrations of the earlier transmitters from him, such as Ibn Abī Dhiʾb and Ibn Jurayj.”
2096 — “His gray hairs numbered about twenty.”
Al-Tirmidhī reported it in al-Shamāʾil (p. 39, its abridgement), as did Ibn Mājah (2/383), Aḥmad (2/90), and Abū al-Shaykh (p. 309), from Sharīk, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I say: This is a good chain of transmission for corroborative purposes. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of the two Ṣaḥīḥs, apart from Sharīk.
