thus they pick from his Sunnah whatever suits them and cast aside whatever they please. Among them is a faction that lays claim to knowledge, and some even occupy high religious offices! To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. We ask the Exalted to safeguard us from the evil of both factions—the deniers and the extremists.

The questioning by the two angels in the grave is an established truth and must likewise be affirmed as part of faith; the hadiths on this point are also mutawātir.

The tribulation of the Dajjal is a momentous trial. For that reason the Prophet ﷺ instructed us—in this ḥadith and in others—to seek refuge from its evil, even ordering us to do so during the prayer before the closing salām, as is authentically reported by al-Bukhārī and others. The reports concerning the Dajjal are extremely numerous—indeed, mutawātir according to the scholars of ḥadīth. Hence the classical works of creed state the obligation of believing that he will emerge at the end of time, just as they require belief in the punishment of the grave and in the questioning by the two angels.

The people of the pre-Islamic age who died before his mission—peace and blessings be upon him—will be punished for their idolatry and disbelief. This shows that they are not among the ahl al-fatrah, those to whom no prophet’s call ever reached, contrary to what some latecomers suppose. Had that been the case they would not deserve punishment, for Allah, Exalted is He, says: “We never punish until We have sent a messenger” (Q 17:15). Al-Nawawī, commenting on the ḥadīth in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim in which a man asked, “Messenger of Allah, where is my father?” and he replied, “In the Fire…,” writes (1/114, Indian ed.): “This proves that whoever dies upon disbelief is in the Fire, and that kinship with the closest of relatives will not benefit him. It also proves that one who dies during the fatrah in the state in which the Arabs were—worshipping idols—is from the people of the Fire. This is not punishing someone before the call has reached him, for these people had already been reached by the call of Abraham and of other prophets—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon them all.”
