Ibn Mandah also transmitted it. There is another corroborating report, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd. Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it (2348).
2075 — “Whenever he heard the muezzin, he would repeat what he said, until, when he reached ‘Come to prayer’ and ‘Come to success,’ he would say: ‘There is no power or might except through Allah.’”
Aḥmad (6/9), al-Baghawī in al-Jaʿdiyyāt (f. 102/2), and Ibn al-Sunnī (89) transmitted it from Sharīk, from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from Abū Rāfiʿ, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This chain is weak because of the weakness of ʿĀṣim and Sharīk—who is Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qāḍī. However, the hadith is authentic, as it has a corroborating report, similar in wording, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān. Al-Dārimī (1/273), Ibn Khuzaymah in his Ṣaḥīḥ (416), and Aḥmad (4/98) transmitted it through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, who said: My father narrated to me from my grandfather, from him. This chain has a weakness: all its narrators are trustworthy except ʿAmr—namely, Ibn ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ—from whom no one other than his son Muḥammad narrated. But his brother, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ, corroborated him by narrating it from ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ. Aḥmad transmitted it (4/91–92). Thus, with this corroboration, the chain is good, because two men narrated from this ʿAbd Allāh.
Al-Bukhārī transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 613), as did al-Dārimī and Aḥmad (4/91), through another route containing an unnamed man. Ibn Khuzaymah (414) omitted him from its chain, so that it appeared to have a continuous chain! The hadith has another corroborating report, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb concerning the virtue of responding to the muezzin, which includes:
