“Then he washed his arms until the water ran over his elbows.” Al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated it in Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār (1/22), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr. Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (1/224): “Its narrators have been deemed trustworthy.”
I say: Al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated it through Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Thaʿlabah, narrating it. Qays had poor retention, while Thaʿlabah is deemed acceptable by al-Ḥāfiẓ. There is also a report from Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, narrated by al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī with a weak chain; I have explained its defects in al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah (449).
Further strengthening the hadith is what Nuʿaym ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mujmir narrated: “I saw Abu Hurayrah performing minor ablution. He washed his face and performed the ablution thoroughly; then he washed his right hand, extending into the upper arm, then his left hand, extending into the upper arm . . . Then he said: ‘This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, perform minor ablution.’” Muslim narrated it (1/149). Al-Ṣanʿānī deemed the hadith strengthened in Subul al-Salām by the two hadiths of Thaʿlabah and Wāʾil.
2068 — “Whenever he swore an oath, he would not break it until Allah Most High revealed the expiation for an oath. Then he said: ‘I will not swear an oath and then see something else as better than it, except that I expiate my oath and then do what is better.’”
Al-Ḥākim narrated it (4/301) from Abu al-Ashʿath, who said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭufāwī narrated to us; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, and said:
