Another supporting narration comes from Jābir, who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ once entered a date-grove belonging to the Banū al-Najjār. He heard the voices of some men from that clan—men who had died during the pre-Islamic era—being punished in their graves. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out alarmed and instructed his Companions, ‘Seek refuge from the punishment of the grave.’ ”
Imām Aḥmad records it (3/295–296) with a continuous, sound chain that meets Muslim’s criteria.
A further corroboration appears in a marfūʿ report from Zayd ibn Thābit:
“This community will be tested in its graves. Were it not that you would stop burying one another, I would have asked Allah to let you hear some of what I hear from the punishment of the grave.” Zayd continued: “He then turned to us and said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Fire.’ They replied, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Fire.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.’ They replied, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the trials—those that are manifest and those that are concealed.’ They replied, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the trials—those that are manifest and those that are concealed.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the tribulation of the Antichrist (al-Dajjāl).’ They replied, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the tribulation of the Antichrist.’ ”
159 – “This community will be tried in its graves. Were it not that you would cease burying one another, I would have asked Allah to let you hear some of the punishment of the grave that I hear.” Zayd said: “He then faced us and said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Fire.’ They said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Fire.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.’ They said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the trials—those that are apparent and those that are hidden.’ They said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the trials—those that are apparent and those that are hidden.’ He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the tribulation of the Antichrist.’ They said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from the tribulation of the Antichrist.’ ”
Muslim also relates it (8/160–161) through the route of Ibn ʿUlayyah, who said: Sāʿid al-Jarīrī informed us, on the authority of Abū Naḍrah, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, on the authority of Zayd ibn Thābit. Abū Saʿīd said: “I did not witness this directly from the Prophet ﷺ, but Zayd ibn Thābit related it to me.” He said:
“While the Prophet ﷺ was in an orchard belonging to the Banū al-Najjār, riding his mule with us beside him, it suddenly shied and nearly threw him. Nearby were six—or perhaps five, or four—graves (al-Jarīrī was unsure). He asked, ‘Who knows the occupants of these graves?’ A man replied, ‘I do.’ The Prophet asked, ‘When did these people die?’ The man said, ‘They died in a state of polytheism.’ He then …” — and he recounted the remainder of the narration.
