Both of them also narrated, on the authority of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“We do not leave an inheritance; whatever we leave behind is charity. The family of Muhammad may only partake of this property.”
Abū Dāwūd (2969) also narrated it, adding: “That is, Allah’s property; they may not take more than their sustenance.”
2039 — “Everything that clouds the mind is khamr, and every intoxicant is forbidden. Whoever drinks an intoxicant will have his prayer diminished for forty mornings. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance; but if he returns to it a fourth time, Allah is bound to give him to drink from ṭīnat al-khabāl.” It was asked, “What is ṭīnat al-khabāl?” He replied, “The pus of the inhabitants of Hell. Whoever gives it to drink to a young child who does not distinguish what is lawful from what is forbidden, Allah is bound to give him to drink from ṭīnat al-khabāl.”
Abū Dāwūd (3680) recorded it—and al-Bayhaqī (8/288) by way of him—from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUmar al-Ṣanʿānī, who said: “I heard al-Nuʿmān relate from Ṭāwūs, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributing it to the Prophet.”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. This al-Nuʿmān is Ibn Abī Shaybah ʿUbayd al-Ṣanʿānī, whose trustworthiness is undisputed. The same applies to Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUmar al-Ṣanʿānī.
Note: After the name “al-Nuʿmān,” Shaykh Muḥammad Muḥyī al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, the editor of Sunan Abū Dāwūd, added “ibn Bashīr.” This was his mistake: he mistakenly thought that he was the well-known Companion al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr. Rather, he was Ibn Abī Shaybah, as we have stated, and he was a Follower of the Successors. Likewise, someone else erred and wrote above the name Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUmar al-Ṣanʿānī, in the copy of Sunan Abū Dāwūd from which I have quoted—the Ẓāhiriyyah Library copy—“unknown.” This too is mistaken, because he assumed him to be the Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUmar al-Ṣanʿānī from whom al-Tirmidhī narrated. That was another narrator, who came later than the former and whose reliability is unestablished, as stated in al-Taqrīb. I have thus drawn attention to the matter without publicly exposing anyone.
