2037 — “Whatever of the lower garment extends below the ankles is in the Fire.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/138/2), through al-Yamān ibn al-Mughīrah, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this.
I say: This chain of transmission is weak because of this al-Yamān. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Weak.” Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (5/124): “Al-Yamān is considered weak by the majority, while Ibn ʿAdī said: ‘There is no harm in him.’”
I say: The hadith is authentic, for it has many supporting reports:
-
From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Whatever of the lower garment hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.” Al-Bukhārī (4/73), al-Nasāʾī (2/299), and Aḥmad (2/255, 287, 410, 461, 498, 504) recorded it through several routes from him.
-
From Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. Al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Mājah (3572) recorded it with a chain whose narrators are trustworthy.
-
From ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), attributed to the Prophet: “Whatever of the lower garment is below the ankles is in the Fire.” Aḥmad (6/59, 254, 257) recorded it from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: “I heard Abū Nubayh say: ‘I heard ʿĀʾishah say it.’”
I say: This is a good chain for corroborative purposes. Its narrators are known and trustworthy, apart from this Abū Nubayh, who was deemed reliable.
