The ninth route: Al-Mustaẓill ibn Ḥuṣayn related that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb asked ʿAlī for his daughter’s hand. ʿAlī excused himself on account of her youth, saying, “I have reserved her for my nephew Jaʿfar.” ʿUmar said, “By Allah, I did not seek marital relations with her; rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say…” He then cited it. Al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī recorded it in al-Mukhtārah, no. (266—in my edition), through the route of Sharīk, from Shabīb ibn Abī Gharqadah, from al-Mustaẓill. Sharīk had poor retention, though he was truthful and may be cited as corroborative evidence.

As for the hadith of al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, Aḥmad (4/323), al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Bayhaqī narrated it through the route of Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from him, attributed to the Prophet. Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (9/203): “It contains Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar. No one criticized her or declared her reliable, while the rest of its narrators have been declared reliable.”

As for the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, its wording is: “Every relationship of lineage and affinity by marriage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection, except my lineage and my affinity by marriage.” Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (19/60/2) from Sulaymān ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Aqṭaʿ: Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Jaʿfar, who said: “I heard Ibn ʿUmar say it,” attributed to the Prophet.
I say: This chain of transmission is very weak and has several defects. First: Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd—al-Khūzī al-Makkī—was abandoned. Second: Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Salām—al-Makhzūmī al-Makkī—was weak. Third: Abū Ḥātim wrote from Sulaymān ibn ʿUmar al-Aqṭaʿ, but his son, in (2/1/131), mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation of him; he is therefore unknown in status. In sum, the hadith is authentic through the combined strength of these routes. And Allah knows best.
