recognized him.
The sixth route: Aḥmad ibn Sinān ibn Asad ibn Ḥibbān al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Ḥammād informed us; Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ related to me that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say…” He then cited it. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Silafī recorded it in Muʿjam al-Safar (fol. 192/2).
I say: The narrators in this chain are trustworthy hadith masters, apart from Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, whose name was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. No one other than this Ḥammād—namely, Ibn Salamah—narrated from him. Ibn Maʿīn said: “Sound.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Acceptable, from the fourth generation.” He was therefore a Successor who did not live to meet ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.
The seventh route: From al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥasan, from his father, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb related something similar to it. Al-Bayhaqī recorded it with a weak, interrupted chain of transmission.
The eighth route: Abū Mūsā al-Madanī transmitted it in al-Laṭāʾif min Daqāʾiq al-Maʿārif (2/1), through al-Dāraquṭnī and his chain of transmission: al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAmr al-Ḥanafī narrated to us; al-Naḍr ibn Manṣūr narrated to us; ʿUqbah ibn ʿAlqamah al-Yashkurī narrated to us. He said: “I heard ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) say: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that he passed by ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him), who was dejected and sorrowful after the loss of his wife, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked him, and he replied: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say…’” He then cited it. He said: “No one narrated it with this chain of transmission except al-Naḍr.”
I say: Ibn ʿAsākir also narrated it through his route (11/83/1), and it is weak. Moreover, the narrator from whom he transmitted it, al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAmr al-Ḥanafī, was a liar.
