of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say”—then he cited it—“and I wished to have with you, members of the Household, a bond of kinship and marriage.” Ali then rose, ordered that his daughter by Fatimah be adorned, and sent her to Umar, the Commander of the Believers. When he saw her, he rose to meet her, took hold of her calf, and said: “Tell your father: ‘I am pleased, I am pleased, I am pleased.’” When the girl returned to her father, he asked her: “What did the Commander of the Believers say to you?” She replied: “He called me over and kissed me. Then, when I stood to leave, he took hold of my calf and said: ‘Tell your father that I am pleased.’” So Ali gave her to him in marriage, and she bore him Zayd ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab. He lived until he became a man, then died.”
It was recorded by Abu Bakr al-Shafi‘i in al-Fawa’id (73/257/1), Ibn ‘Adi (6/2), and al-Khatib in al-Tarikh (6/182), in the biography of this Ibn Rustam. Al-Khatib did not mention any narrator criticism or accreditation concerning him. As for Ibn ‘Adi, he said of him: “He is not well known; he reports rejected hadiths from reliable transmitters.”
I say: The most objectionable feature of it is the mention of kissing. As for uncovering the calf, it has been reported through a route other than this one. This is the second route: through several chains from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, from his father—some of them adding, “from Ali ibn al-Husayn”—that Umar ibn al-Khattab proposed marriage to Umm Kulthum from Ali. Ali said: “I have set her aside for my nephew, Abdullah ibn Ja‘far.” Umar said: “Give her to me in marriage. By Allah, none among the people is as concerned with her affair as I am.” So Ali gave her to him in marriage. Umar then came to the Emigrants and said: “Will you not congratulate me?” They asked: “For whom, Commander of the Believers?” He replied: “Umm Kulthum, daughter of Ali and daughter of Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say”—then he cited it.
It was recorded by Sa‘id ibn Mansur in his Sunan (520–521), Ibn Sa‘d in al-Tabaqat (8/463), al-Thaqafi in al-Fawa’id (no. 40 in my copy), and al-Hakim (3/142), whose version contains the addition; likewise al-Bayhaqi (7/63–64). Al-Hakim said:
