I say: The version attributed to the Companion was transmitted by al-Dārimī (1/126–127), Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (7/22), Abū Khaythamah in al-ʿIlm (no. 120—edited by me), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (1/62/2), al-Ḥākim in al-Mustadrak (1/106), al-Khaṭīb in al-Taqyīd (pp. 96–97), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, through various chains from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muthannā al-Anṣārī, as a report attributed to the Companion. Al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī declared it authentic.
I say: This is open to question, for although this ʿAbd Allāh is among al-Bukhārī’s narrators, a number of scholars criticized him, as al-Dhahabī himself explained in al-Mīzān and al-Ḥāfiẓ in al-Tahdhīb. He summarized this in al-Taqrīb, saying: “Truthful, but frequently mistaken.”
The other route: I have found another route for it, better than this one. Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways narrated it from Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm, the nephew of Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording. It was transmitted by Abū Muḥammad al-Makhladī in al-Fawāʾid (245/2), Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Aṣbahān (2/228), and al-Quḍāʿī in Musnad al-Shihāb (53/2), through various routes from him.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, and all its narrators meet al-Bukhārī’s conditions. Were it not for the criticism concerning Ibn Abī Uways’s retention, I would have declared it authentic. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful; he erred in hadiths which he narrated from memory.” Al-Dhahabī said in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ: “Truthful; al-Nasāʾī declared him weak.”
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAmr, it is a corroborating report for it, narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
