In al-Tirmidhī’s version, it is paired with the hadith of Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Zayd ibn Arqam, attributed to the Prophet, in a hadith. He said: “A good, singular hadith.”
I say: ʿAṭiyyah is weak, and Ḥabīb practised tadlīs. Thus, the hadith is good when its two chains are taken together; indeed, it is authentic, since it has supporting evidence in the hadith of Zayd ibn Thābit, which is cited in al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr (977, 978) and al-Mishkāh (6153). In the hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam: “Indeed, I am leaving among you two weighty matters, one of which is the Book of Allah. It is the rope of Allah: whoever follows it is upon guidance, and whoever abandons it is in misguidance.” It was narrated by Muslim (7/123) and Ibn Ḥibbān (123—Shākir). In the hadith of Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzāʿī, attributed to the Prophet: “This Quran is a means—that is, a rope—one end of which is in Allah’s Hand and the other end in your hands; so hold fast to it.” The hadith has been cited above under no. 713.
