and in the Sunan of al-Bayhaqī (5/42), through Abū al-ʿĀliyah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “It is as though I can see Moses (peace be upon him) descending from the mountain pass, raising his voice to Allah in the talbiyah.” He then narrated, through Mujāhid from him, something similar, with the wording: “As for Moses, he was a curly-haired man upon a red camel, with a fibre halter through its nose. It is as though I can see him, as he descends into the valley, reciting the talbiyah.”
I have found another chain for it which contains strong corroboration for the two Qatwānī cloaks. Al-Ṭabarānī said in al-Awsaṭ (1/119/2): “Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythamah narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Hāshim al-Ṭūsī narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Seventy prophets prayed in the Mosque of al-Khayf, among them Moses (peace be upon him). It is as though I can see him wearing two Qatwānī cloaks, in a state of pilgrimage consecration, upon a camel of Azd Shanūʾah, with a halter of palm fibre through its nose, and with his hair in two braids.’” He said: “No one narrated it from ʿAṭāʾ except Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl, and ʿAbd Allāh alone narrated it.”
I say: He is trustworthy and one of Muslim’s shaykhs, and those above him are likewise trustworthy, except that ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib became confused in his later years. In sum, through this corroborating report, the hadith rises to the rank of good. And Allah knows best.
2024 — “The Book of Allah is Allah’s extended rope from heaven to earth.”
Al-Tirmidhī (3790), Aḥmad (3/14, 17, 26, 59), and al-Ṭabarī (vol. 7, no. 7572, p. 72) narrated it through several chains from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it.
